Are you saying that, had the recording been just of the singer/guitarist, it would have been harder to follow the songs' stories? In other words, the songs suffer if the steel player isn't playing? If so, I completely agree and had the same thought as I was listening. I think the guy does an excellent matching the tone of the songs and ads so much to them. Better news: I think he's available if you should find yourself in Austin!
the way he writes and sings in interesting and without the steel player it would be harder to focus on the story i feel.
